Self-repair of an interior door

 Self-repair of an interior door

As long as the doors look attractive and function well, most homeowners do not think about the need for maintenance. But even the most expensive and seemingly reliable samples need periodic inspection and prevention: adjustment and lubrication of hinges, handles, cleaning the canvas and covering it with appropriate compounds.

When an interior door needs to be repaired

In the absence of maintenance or unfavorable operating conditions, problems may arise - doors can:

  • dry out (cracks appear);
  • sit down and touch the floor;
  • start to creak;
  • loose (or, conversely, too tight) to close;
  • loose on the hinges.

It should be added here that not always the cause of the above-described troubles is the incorrect operation of the structure. This is often due to the poor quality of the product itself.

How to repair a wooden door

In cases where the defects are small (for example, small scratches, chips, small delaminations), repairs can be made without dismantling the structure. However, a major overhaul requires the door to be removed. Only in this case can we talk about its full restoration. For such work, you will need the following tools and special compositions:

  • screwdriver (cross or flat, depending on the type of screw);
  • lever for removing the blade (pry bar, nailer, shovel handle or special device);
  • sandpaper (fine-grained No. 2000 and 220-240);
  • angle grinder ("grinder") with a velcro circle;
  • plane;
  • roulette;
  • PVA glue;
  • pigment additives for the shade of the door (for example, ocher);
  • wax or wax crayon;
  • paint (matte enamel);
  • flat and small (for drawing) brushes.

Removing the door

Dismantling is more convenient to carry out after removing the platbands, especially since usually these decorative elements also need restoration. The processing of platbands and doors must be carried out with the same compounds so that there are no differences in shades. It is more convenient to remove the door together: one holds the canvas, the other unscrews the screws from the hinges. Loops can be of several types, most often there are card suspension mechanisms. To remove the canvas with such fittings, it must be lifted in the open position, and then unscrew one part of the hinge from the box, and the other from the door itself. There are also cut-in and screw-in mechanisms, which do not differ much from card ones, the sequence of actions for their removal is the same.

Most modern doors have decorative plugs on the hinges that must be removed to gain access to the screws. In addition to the above division, there is another classification of loops.

  1. Removable. These are constructions due to which the canvas opens 90 degrees. Removing such a sash does not cause any difficulties: open it and place any flat object (for example, a wooden block) under the door that will support the weight of the structure. Next, use any lever to lift the sash up and remove it from the hinges. Perform the operation with an assistant.

    A special tool can be used to remove the door from the hinges.

  2. Non-removable. These are designs that allow you to open the canvas at an angle of 180 degrees. To restore the door to work, unscrew all the fasteners.

It is not always possible to do this with a flat or curly screwdriver: you may also need a hex key (or "asterisk").

Removing the old coating

Preparing the surface for future processing is of paramount importance. The quality of the restored door and its appearance depend on how correctly it is executed. There are several ways to remove the old coating.

  1. Using sandpaper. It needs to be fixed on a special holder (sold in hardware stores) or just wrap it around a suitable wooden block. Use a coarse sandpaper first, gradually moving down to a finer one.
  2. Using a grinder. It is much more convenient and faster. However, in the corners, the old coating will have to be removed by hand.

    You can use a sander to quickly remove the old coating.

  3. By means of a solvent. Here you need to be very careful when choosing a composition - automotive solvents No. 650 or 648 are suitable. Otherwise, there is a risk of spoiling the wood. Wipe the surface with a cloth (you need to wrap a small piece of wood) soaked in solvent until the varnish is completely removed.

Grinding

Sanding is best done by hand. It will take longer, but the result will be better compared to using a sander. If your door is made of hardwood, use sandpaper no. 180 for finishing, for soft cloths, no. 220-240 will do. When working by hand, use a hard rubber backing. After sanding, check for cracks and holes - they need to be putty. To do this, use a varnish with the addition of colored pigments (for example, ocher) in the same shade as the door. It is necessary to close up defects carefully so that you do not have to grind the canvas again.

All flaws in the door leaf can be conditionally divided into minor and serious. Each damage has its own repair technology. The process of restoring a wooden surface with minor damages - scratches will look like this.

  1. Prepare liquid wax and remove dust and dirt from the canvas.
  2. Sand problem areas with fine-grained sandpaper so as not to completely remove the varnish layer.
  3. Heat the wax and apply it to a scratch or abrasion. Remove excess immediately with a soft cloth.
  4. If using a wax crayon, cut off a piece, rub it in the palms of your hands to warm it up, and spread over the affected area.

Using wax and a soldering iron with a nozzle, small scratches can be made invisible

After repairing with wax, it is not recommended to treat the canvas with varnish, since over time it crumbles.

There is a non-standard method for eliminating minor defects on veneered doors. To restore a pattern that imitates valuable wood species, you will need oil paint of the appropriate shade and a small brush.

  1. The area with a flaw is treated with sandpaper, and a thin layer of the composition is applied to the surface of the canvas, which must be rubbed into the damaged area.
  2. With a brush, thin lines are drawn that imitate the texture of wood.
  3. Polishing the canvas with silicone grease.

To eliminate large damage in the form of deep cracks and chips, there is a technology of its own, which consists in installing a patch. The most difficult thing is to choose a veneer with the same pattern. The algorithm of actions will be as follows.

  1. Cut out the problem area to create smooth edges.
  2. Attach the patch and place it in a position where the veneer pattern matches the original as much as possible.
  3. For gluing, use a PVA compound.
  4. Take a wax pencil and mask the joints around the perimeter.

    To eliminate major damage, the defective area must be cut out, and a patch must be put in its place, picking up a fragment that matches the veneer pattern as much as possible

The restoration of a door with a swollen veneer has its own characteristics. You can try to fix the defect in a folk way. This will require a damp cloth and an iron set to medium heat. Cover with a damp cloth for 10 minutes. Then the heated iron is applied to the damaged area for a few seconds. If this does not help, then use other methods.

  1. Introduce PVA glue under the bulge using a disposable syringe. Apply a hot iron and wait 20 seconds (repeat the process if necessary).

    You can remove bulges on a veneered door using PVA glue and an iron.

  2. Inject PVA with a syringe under the swollen area and place a heavy object on it for several hours.

Preparing and painting the door

For coating, choose white enamel without gloss, and for tinting use tinting paint (for example, Belinka). The composition should not be excessively liquid (the required consistency is thick sour cream). Perform work with a roller and a brush (you will need it for painting hard-to-reach places). First, prepare the door - sand it with sandpaper as shown above. The algorithm for further actions will be as follows.

  1. Dilute the paint to the desired consistency and pour it into a small bowl.
  2. Apply the first coat of paint along the grain and wait for it to dry.
  3. Paint the canvas a second time in the same way. This is often enough.
  4. If a more dense staining is required, then apply the composition in several layers, each of which dry for 24 hours and process with fine-grained emery paper (No. 2000). This technology allows for perfect coverage.

    Paneled doors have a complex uneven surface, so it is more convenient to paint them with a brush

There is another way to paint an interior door. After sanding the surface, prepare the enamel and colourant. Then proceed as follows.

  1. Apply the enamel in several layers, letting each of them dry for a day.
  2. Sand the finish surface with fine-grained emery paper.
  3. Take a tinting compound of the required shade and apply it to the canvas with a brush.

Each layer (there are 2-3 in total) dries for 6 hours. This technology guarantees the selection of the desired tone and the appearance of shine.

Replacing glass in an interior door

Before replacing the glass, carry out preparatory work, for which remove the door and lay it on a flat surface. Prepare the necessary tools and compositions:

  • a narrow chisel or flat screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • sandpaper No. 120-160;
  • roulette;
  • latex gloves;
  • glass cutter (if you cut the glass yourself);
  • sealant;
  • decorative carnations.

    Before replacing the glass, the door must be laid horizontally on solid, reliable supports.

Dismantling old glass

The glass removal algorithm will be as follows.

  1. If the glass is broken, remove the remaining fragments, if it is intact, remove the decorative nails with pliers and remove the glazing beads.

    The staples must be removed from the frame with a narrow trowel.

  2. Sand the seat with sandpaper or a narrow trowel.

    Before installing the glass, the seat must be cleaned

  3. Measure the opening.

    Before buying or cutting out new glass yourself, you need to measure the opening in which it will be installed

  4. Order glass or cut it yourself (its perimeter dimensions should be 1.5–2 mm less than the opening).

Video: replacing glass in an interior door

Installing new glass

When the preparatory stage has been passed, you can proceed with the installation. The process takes place in several stages.

  1. Apply silicone sealant around the perimeter of the opening.

    Use a special gun to apply sealant

  2. Reinsert the glass.

    The glass on both sides should be 1.5-2 mm less than the opening, then it will easily be installed in its place

  3. Re-seal the perimeter of the glass with sealant.
  4. Install the glazing beads (it is better to buy new ones) and secure them with decorative studs.

    You need to drive in the nails carefully, directing them at the required angle so as not to break the glass

Wait a couple of hours and hang the door in the interior opening.

Glass replacement in one-piece door

But what if the door structure and glass are a single whole? That is, there are no glazing beads and it is not clear how to remove the glass. There is only one way out: you need to disassemble the door.

  1. Carefully inspect the canvas and determine if there are plugs disguised in the color of the surface. There are usually self-tapping screws under them.
  2. Carefully remove the plugs and unscrew the fasteners.
  3. Pull out one of the door sides. When the glass is free, it can be removed freely.
  4. Insert a new glass, put the side panel back in place, screw in the screws and install the plugs.

Repair of laminated doors

The easiest way to get rid of small damages in the form of scratches and small cracks is to apply the wax method described above. But there is another option - a furniture touch. It is a special liquid compound for the repair of laminated sheets. The substance must be shaken and then applied to the defective place in the form of a pair of successive layers. Remove excess with a damp cloth. After the composition has dried, treat the problem area with felt soaked in furniture polish.

Repair of sliding doors

Sliding doors are popular with small home owners. Their canvases practically do not take up space, thereby saving a scarce area. You can install such doors yourself, while repairs usually do not cause difficulties. The most common defects and how to fix them are described below.

  1. Application of excessive force when opening and closing. Check the guides: they may have accumulated dirt, which can be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner. The doors can be difficult to open due to the jumped out rollers: in this case, it is enough to put them in place. If the casters are worn out, they should be replaced.
  2. Sash loosening. It occurs due to the loosening of the fasteners of the upper guide bar. It needs to be fixed (tighten the screws harder) or replaced.

    Sliding doors can be difficult to open due to defects in the position of the rollers in the guide rail

Elimination of hardware defects

In addition to defects in the surface of the canvas, other flaws are inherent in the interior doors, the correction of which should be described in more detail.

Bad door closing

When closing, the door leaf may touch the floor or touch the door frame from the sides or from above. In this case, you must perform the following actions.

  1. First of all, inspect the hinges: most likely, the fastening is loose. A similar problem is typical for products that have been in operation for a long time. Take a screwdriver or screwdriver and tighten the hardware. If this does not help and the hinges are still dangling, you will have to go to the store for new ones.

    The door hinge is fixed in the leaf and frame with self-tapping screws, if the fasteners are loosened, the door may sag

  2. It also happens that the hinges sag in the door frame, especially if it is made of soft wood (for example, pine). In this case, you will have to rearrange this piece of fittings to another place. It is recommended to fill and paint the remaining indentations (the restoration technology is described above).
  3. Another reason is that the ends of the canvas touch the platbands. Sink the hinges deeper into the door frame.

Skewed door leaf

Quite an unpleasant defect: the sash begins to touch the floor covering, scratching it. The main causes of the problem:

  • high humidity in the room (even dampness);
  • natural wear and tear;
  • incorrect fastening of the hinges;
  • constant temperature drops;
  • skewed door frame;
  • manufacturing defects.

A similar flaw is typical for summer cottages and country houses, which are operated only in the summer season. To fix a skewed door, follow these steps.

  1. Remove the canvas from the hinges and pull the lock out of the end.
  2. Inspect the hinges: if they are badly worn, then replace them (if the fasteners are loose, screw in the screws tighter).
  3. Measure the door geometry with a construction square.
  4. Check the flatness of the ends with a rail.
  5. If there are deviations from the norm, use a plane to stitch the canvas from the ends.
  6. If the skew is large, use rubber or felt spacers. They are fixed with small nails (a stapler is suitable) or furniture glue.
  7. Remove the platbands and inspect the door frame: if there are gaps in the joints, then the structure should be dismantled and its individual elements should be fixed with screws or wood glue.

You can fix a lopsided door frame with a wooden block.

Hinges creak

There are several reasons for door hinges to squeak. Here's how to deal with each of them.

  1. When installing the door, the hinges were not fixed correctly. To fix this, screw a part of the loop with a pin to the end of the canvas, and a half loop with a hole to the box (often they do everything the other way around). As a result, the factory grease will not flow out.
  2. Loosening of the hinges. If the door has been in operation for a long time, then the hinges just need to be replaced.
  3. Lack of lubrication. If you don't have a special composition at hand, use folk remedies: melted paraffin, a pencil lead or car engine oil. WD40 spray is also suitable. To lubricate the hinges, simply lift the door with the lever.

    You can lubricate the hinges with a syringe without removing the door

Locking tongue offset

If the tongue of the lock is displaced to the side, the door will not close properly. To eliminate the malfunction, you need to do the following.

  1. Mark the tab with chalk and cover the canvas: the resulting print will show the location of the hole.
  2. If the tongue is lower, check the attachment of the hinges and tighten them.
  3. When shifting to the left or right, remove the lock plate and widen the mating hole.

    To move the door tongue, you need to remove the trim

Alternative repair methods

In addition to the classic repair methods associated with staining, tinting and varnishing, there are alternative methods that can literally transform an interior door.

Vinyl stickers

The process of gluing itself is quite simple and any owner of a living space can handle it. But first, choose a suitable type of film, which can be matte, glossy, imitating natural materials, with a pattern, etc. Stickers with photos in 3D look especially impressive. Such stickers are very popular today: you can buy not only a ready-made image, but also order your own - for example, with a photo of relatives or the landscape of your suburban area. The use of stickers allows you to relatively quickly and reliably mask minor defects on the surface of the door, and at the same time give it an aesthetic appeal. Follow some simple rules when gluing.

  1. Prepare the door. Clean it from varnish with a grinder. If there are cracks and pits, fill them with putty, and knock down the bumps with a plane. Dismantle the lock and handles (all work is best done on the door removed from the hinges).
  2. Mark out the film and cut it open with a clerical knife.
  3. Stick the material onto the surface while smoothing it with a spatula.
  4. Cut off any excess.

Using vinyl stickers with 3D images will help transform your interior door beyond recognition

MDF onlays

MDF linings are painted, laminated or veneered. In the latter case, use natural material or its imitation - eco-veneer. For the manufacture of colored linings, special compounds are used that are resistant to aggressive media (for example, detergents). Laminated onlays are resistant to mechanical stress and easy to clean.

MDF linings for interior doors are prefabricated

To install the MDF overlay, you need to do the following steps.

  1. Dismantle the door leaf and remove all hardware.
  2. Prepare the surface: it must be even and smooth (use the sanding methods described above).
  3. Apply wood glue to the inside of the cover.
  4. Place an overlay on the canvas and secure it with clamps through a soft cloth from four sides.

Independent repair of an interior door today does not cause any particular difficulties: the market offers a wide variety of materials - paints, adhesives, special compositions for cosmetic restoration and decoration. There is also a special plus: restoring an old door with your own hands, you can give it a shade that best matches the style of the interior of a house or apartment.

Why are they good for interior door design? First of all, this is the versatility of drawings and a wide range of colors, you do not need to be able to draw in order to be guaranteed to get a real art object in your interior. In the photo you can see what examples of such a solution can be. As a basis, you will need a flat canvas from which handles and other accessories are twisted. It will be superfluous to remove it from the hinges, since the wallpaper will stick perfectly in an upright position. As a drawing, you can choose a gorgeous flower, a landscape in the form of a spacious field, a path stretching into the distance. Wallpaper in the form of an old cabinet filled with dusty precious folios always looks very interesting, and for the kitchen you can offer imitation of shelves filled with all kinds of beautiful food and supplies. You can find more options in the catalogs of leading manufacturers of this type of finishing materials, or use the services of a printing center, where you can transfer almost any image or photograph to an adhesive or wallpaper base.

Another remedy for decor of interior doorsthat have even inserts or are completely flat, without a design, these are vinyl stickers. They are applied to any surface according to the instructions and then serve for a long time on the door surface. Again, to make it clearer for you what kind of jewelry we are talking about, you can pay attention to the photo above, which shows examples of using such stickers. Before installing an interior door with your own hands, you can apply a sticker on it in advance to make it easier to work. It is important not to allow air bubbles on the surface, due to which the film may be damaged later, and the drawing itself will not look too neat.

DIY door decor

The use of decoupage technique in combination with special craquelure paint looks especially beautiful. It allows you to see a grid of cracks on a wooden surface, as if this layer of paint is already more than a dozen years old. Artificially aged furniture or a door leaf, as in this case, is very much appreciated by lovers of vintage and classic styles, and for the shabby chic style, in which any scuffs, cracks and imperfections are generally extolled, this will be a real must-have thing. Moreover, for front door decor you will need paint, a few paper napkins, PVA glue and varnish to fix the result.

Appliques can be not only flat, but also voluminous, as in the case of a small example of do-it-yourself autumn decor, which is shown in the photo above. This idea can be applied not only to Halloween, but also left until the New Year holidays. For the composition, you will need to make several black bats using thick cardboard or fabric, several of them can be applied using vinyl stickers directly to the door leaf and enjoy an interesting result.

Techniques you can use old door decor, are not limited to exclusively coloring (although you can get original results with it), because you can turn the glass insert into a stained glass window, as well as transform the canvas by presenting it in the patchwork style. For the first task, you will need special stained glass paints and a contour, as well as the ability to draw lines with a firm, unwavering hand. For the second technique, use scraps of different shades and coupons that have accumulated in your household, but it is desirable that the fabric be approximately the same texture. First "try on" all the wealth to each other on the floor to see how the parts will fold into a single whole, then take a picture and start sticking on the surface of the door, starting from the top.

Where to begin?

First you need to pay attention to where you want to install the door, or rather how it will be used. The discrepancy between different elements of the interior is one of the main mistakes.

Most often, wood is used to create compartment doors. Warm wood colors, unique texture and aroma have not gone out of fashion for a very long time. They are classified as enduring values. Not all people can afford expensive breeds, so they themselves are works of art. Softwoods such as spruce and pine are commonly chosen for inexpensive doors. They are often painted or varnished.

Do-it-yourself wooden door handle

Wooden door handles for various premises are quite expensive. The high price is due to the use of manual labor and originality of execution. The design itself is not particularly complex, and you can make it yourself. The article indicates the advantages and disadvantages of wood models, and also describes various technologies for creating door accessories with your own hands.

FEATURES OF WOODEN DOOR HANDLES

Since ancient times, door fittings have been made of wood. Later, metal products and elements made of modern materials competed with them. However, even today, wooden models are widely popular due to their advantages:

  1. High quality sanded and processed wood is pleasant to the touch. A wood handle is not as cold as a metal or plastic handle.
  2. Wood fittings are indispensable for the arrangement of baths and saunas. Wooden elements do not heat up to high temperatures like metal ones, and the likelihood of getting burned in contact with the handle is reduced to zero.
  3. Do-it-yourself ease of making wood door handles. Wood is easy to process, and working with it does not require expensive equipment. Using bars, slats or log cabins, it will turn out to create a structure of any shape.
  4. Affordable cost.

Despite the significant advantages, wooden products also have some disadvantages:

  1. The strength characteristics of wood are inferior to metal elements. This fact must be taken into account when erecting a structure that is subjected to significant loads. In this case, it is better to give preference to hard wood or metal.
  2. With prolonged contact with metal surfaces, the tree is destroyed. Therefore, it is advisable to select door handles for doors in accordance with the material of manufacture of the door leaf.
  3. In order for a wood handle to serve for a long time, it should be carefully processed: sanded and impregnated with protective compounds.

CHOICE OF WOOD FOR MAKING A HANDLE

Accessories installed on entrance doors must be made of strong wood species. Some experts recommend using conifers, which, when heated, emit a pleasant and healthy aroma. However, hard-leaved species, which are distinguished by an elegant texture pattern and good mechanical resistance, are no less in demand.

Advice. Doorknobs are best made from deciduous trees so that no resin remains on the hands when gripped.

For making handles on the door with your own hands, the following are suitable:

  1. Oak - is characterized by strength, resistance to external influences and hardness. Oak products look respectable and noble, perfect for furnishing country cottages and apartments.
  2. Beech is a valuable breed, similar in many qualities to oak. The wood has an unusual pinkish tint with a uniform texture.
  3. Poplar - has pronounced bactericidal properties, which is why it is often used when decorating a steam room.
  4. Linden - has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the human body.

HOW TO MAKE A DOOR HANDLE WITH YOUR OWN HANDS: CUTTING MODEL

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

The creation of a carved model of a door handle involves the use of the following materials and tools:

  • wooden flat billet
  • a branch of an unusual shape
  • saw and electric jigsaw
  • cutter and nozzles
  • drill
  • sandpaper or sander
  • clamp
  • epoxy adhesive
  • dowels
  • varnish.

MANUFACTURING AND INSTALLATION

The sequence of creating a door handle:

  1. Clean the cut of the tree from the bark, grind and apply contours to the workpiece - this will be the base of the future handle.
  2. With a jigsaw, "go" along the contour and give the tree the necessary shape.
  3. To add texture to the workpiece, you can use a cutter by making grooves in the marked areas of the wood cut.
  4. Grind the side ends of the product, remove the chamfer from the edges of the workpiece.
  5. The handle is made from an unusual knot. Remove the bark from the branch and try on the handle to the base.
  6. Cut the edges with a saw so that the ends of the handle are in tight contact with the prepared workpiece.
  7. Apply epoxy glue to the handle, press it to the base and clamp the parts with a clamp.
  8. Drill holes in the bases of the handle at an angle, grease the pins with glue and drive them in, thereby strengthening the structure. Saw off the excess peg.
  9. Leave the pen to dry for one day.
  10. Cover the product with varnish, wait until it is completely dry and install it on the door.

SIMPLE WOODEN SAUNA HANDLE

A homemade doorknob will surprise the guests of the bath and will become the pride of the owners of the steam room. Building a simple model is easy. Consider an example of creating a handle with a length of 26 cm and a height of 10 cm. For work, you need a board with dimensions of 26 * 10 * 5 cm, a simple pencil and a jigsaw.

  • Draw a sketch of the pen on the sheet. The drawing is easier to display in cells. To draw arcs and curved lines, you can use a mold or improvised round objects of a suitable diameter.
  • Transfer the contours to a tree and cut the workpiece along them with an electric jigsaw. To get an even cut, it is better to use a metal saw.
  • Optionally, you can smooth out the shape of the handle and remove chamfers, apply a pattern, carved drawing or decorate with a burner.
  • Attach the handle to the door with screws.

DOOR HANDLE IN RUSSIAN FOLK STYLE

A piece of the carved handle will harmoniously fit into the interior, designed in the traditional folk style. The handle will beautifully complement the antique-styled door. The design of the model includes 6 elements:

  • base
  • intermediate bars - 2 pcs.
  • cubes - 2 pcs.
  • lever.

First you need to prepare each detail separately, fit them together and grind them. Manufacturing procedure:

  • Substrate preparation:
    • on a plank measuring 36 * 9 * 2 cm, apply the markings according to the drawing
    • cut corners and semicircles with a jigsaw if there is no such tool at hand, then processing can be done with a semicircular file.
  • Make intermediate blocks. In planks with dimensions of 6 * 2 * 2 cm, make a longitudinal hole with a diameter of 8 mm. In the future, pins will be installed in them to assemble all the elements into a single structure.
  • Prepare cubes with a side of 4 cm:
    • peel off and grind a block with a section of 4 * 4 cm, about 10 cm long
    • cut a bar into cubes
    • in the resulting blanks, make two holes with a diameter of 8 mm along the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • Make a handle from a bar 15 cm long and with a cross section of 3 * 3 cm. Drill holes 2 cm deep from the end sides, with a diameter of 8 mm.
  • Make decorative carvings on wooden blanks:
    • Base. Mark the outlines of leaves, squares and crosses on the board. With the edge of a knife, pierce the upper points of the ornament and cut out the tree, first on one side, and then on the other, forming grooves equal in width. First, the leaves are cut out, and then the inner crosses.
    • Lever. The thread is made from 4 sides with oblique lines with the same slope. The depth of the groove is about 3-5 mm.
    • Cubes and cubes are decorated with rhombuses and zigzag lines.
  • The assembly is carried out using pins, "planted" on PVA glue. In this case, it is necessary to cover the surface of the holes and the pins themselves with an adhesive.
  • Install the handle on the interior doors with your own hands using screws.

CHECKED WOODEN DOOR HANDLE

To make a sharpened handle for interior doors, you will have to master the skills of working on a lathe. The creation of such a model requires the use of the following tools and materials:

  • three-jaw chuck machine
  • oak bar
  • wood cutters
  • coarse and medium grit sandpaper
  • wax mastic.

  1. Prepare the workpiece. Cut a block of square section a little along the edges on one side. Thus, the rounded part is evenly fixed in the chuck of the machine.
  2. Insert the workpiece into the jaws and use a semicircular cutter to shape it in a cylindrical shape along its entire length.
  3. Align the surface of the bar with the end of the cutter, keeping it at a slight slope.
  4. Shape the upper part of the handle with the sharp edge of the cutter.
  5. Step back some distance from the edge and carve out the base, the back side of which will be adjacent to the door leaf.
  6. Trim the base of the handle with a straight cutter and sand the surface. When sanding, it is important not to overdo it or press too much on the paper, otherwise you can burn your fingers on the rotating elements and ruin the product.
  7. Cover the handle with wax mastic. The tool penetrates into the pores of the wood, protecting the material from external influences and giving the handle a matte sheen.
  8. Cut off the handle from the rest of the raw bar with the edge of the cutter.
  9. Insert the handle into the door.

In the manufacturing process, some nuances should be taken into account:

  • for processing, it is necessary to take material without cracks and knots, otherwise, when rotating, the workpiece may split and cause injury
  • it is advisable to make several handles from one workpiece at once, since the chiseled models are small in size
  • Before sanding and impregnating with a protective compound, all minor gaps in the handle must be filled with a putty designed for woodworking.

INSTALLATION OF HANDLES ON INTERIOR DOORS

Do-it-yourself insertion of handles into interior doors begins with marking the location of the fittings. According to the established norms, a standard door handle is mounted at a height of 80-100 cm from the floor (depending on the height of the residents). The work is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Mark the installation location on the door leaf, at least 6 cm away from the edge.
  2. Using a ruler, draw a straight line across the end side of the door and continue marking from the back of the door leaf.
  3. Prepare a hole with a drill? door thickness.
  4. Repeat drilling on the second side of the blade. It is important that there is no horizontal or vertical deviation of the hole axis.

After removing the old paint, you need to level the canvas with sandpaper. It is attached to a holder and the door is processed, which allows you to remove the remaining layers from hard-to-reach areas, smooth out cracks and scratches.

After the door has been sanded, it must be vacuumed, degreased with white spirit. Then you need to take a primer and, after mixing, apply a thin layer on the canvas. Priming will extend the life of the wood, and will also serve as the basis for applying a new coat of paint. On average, 100 grams of primer are consumed per square meter of the product.... A primer for restoration with a chalk base is suitable, and for opening the varnish when performing work on your own, PVA glue diluted in distilled water is used (in a ratio of 1/1).

After removing the paint, the wooden sheet is sanded and covered with primer.

If the canvas has a deep gap, then it is removed by choosing a piece of wood of the appropriate shade and size. The sliver is greased with wood glue and hammered tightly into the existing hole. After 24 hours, the glue dries up and the surface can be primed, putty and painted. After that, you need to putty the door, apply a special composition with a thin spatula, which can be used to seal small dents. Next, you need to prime the surface so that the paint and varnish layer is absorbed evenly.

The putty should be spread evenly, leaving to dry. Then, to eliminate small defects, you will have to process the surface with fine-grained sandpaper a second time..
